_____Javier Saume-Mazzei was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He began playing percussion at the age of eight. As a teenager, he began his studies in classical percussion and drum set with his uncle, Edgar Saume. Javier has performed with the Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho Orchestra, Ensamble Gurrufio and OGMA, and Miranda States
Orchestra in Venezuela. He has also played and recorded popular music with Rigel Michelena, Petroleo Loco, and others. In 2001, Javier moved to Chicago performing with various bands in the Latin jazz and Venezuelan Folk idioms.

_____Javier graduated with a B.A. in Music from Chicago College of Performing Arts of Roosevelt University where he studied classical percussion with Ed Harrison, drum set with Phil Gratteu, Paul Wertico, and hand percussion with Ruben Alvarez.

_____Javier has toured with Rhonda Richmond’s "The Unbroken Circle, from Africa to Mississippi” in Jackson, Mississippi and New Orleans, Louisiana. He has shared the stage with Reginald Veal, Herlin Riley and Cassandra Wilson. Since joining Sones de Mexico Ensemble, Javier has toured with them at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival 2006, Washington DC, and also in North Carolina, Rhode Island, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, among others.
